Justified in the case of Latios/Latias in that they are separate species, just opposite gender (much like Miltank and Tauros). A NidoranF egg can hatch into a NidoranM, but not vice-versa. In addition, Manaphy and Phione can breed with Ditto to create a Phione egg.
