My mind tried to come up with some reasoning as to why it was supposed to be funny. It failed.
In the game Superman 64, about the only thing you do is go though rings. That's what this is aiming for.

The sad thing is that I can relate to this somewhat, having played Superman 64 when it was new. I must be like the only one to ever make it past all five ring missions and get to the actual raid of Luthor's stronghold. Took me ages though…
