I don't think a mineperson would enjoy coal nearly as much as a nice new cave. After all, who cares about one piece of miserable coal if there are whole veins to mine out?

They already have a decent house which means that they already have obtained coal, hence the fire place. What I can deduce is that he is not actually happy about getting the coal, he is happy that there is the possibility of another human existence in the dark and desolate world. Or maybe he put the coal in there himself to further delude himself into that fantasy. We either have the markings of another possible soul or the beginnings of a mad man.
And then a creeper came and blew up that house and killed her, losing that coal, and now she have to wait another 12 months for another coal.
Coal? COAL?! Who gives a damn about the coal?! How about her ROUND EYES?!
Is coal really so rare for some people that they gotta wait twelve years for it? What, are they Mr. Cratchett from a Christmas Story? Is Scrooge gonna yell at them for taking a piece of coal last week?
