I remember noticing this as a kid and thinking… why does the cover have a picture of Mario slamming into a wall and then dropping into a lava pit? Kinda depressing, but it does make for a decent box design!

*Feels stupid for not realising this much sooner*
It's Luigi.
Cocky bastard thought he could take on a wall and lava with that fire flower.
I think I hear the nintendo ambulance coming now… WII U WII U WII U WII U
I finally get my chance to make a truly witty comment on a young post….
Dammit why can't I be awake enough to think of something witty!?
Advertisement using false information to look cooler and thus get more sales? Surely you jest.
Some walls think they can outsmart me. Maybe, maybe…
But I have yet to meet one who can outsmart fireflower.
Also: Spoilers on the cover! I guarantee that almost all people who played the game fell into lava at some point.
You know people will sell themselves to make decent photos.
-Wait, that does not sound right…-
Wait… isn't he coming out of the lava in the cover? And at quite a high speed I might add… HAX!

Yeah, and Beast Wars* sucked big dinosaur balls through a bendy straw,
what other sh*t is new?

(*inb4 "TRUKK NOT MUNKY")
He'll be fine. That baby can take temperatures up to 9000 degrees.
He's not dying, he's falling with style
8-4 is OP
Clearly, this was a deliberate attempt to, motivate, the player into avoiding the tragic events portrayed on the cover of this electronic interactive entertainment device. Without it, the player would fail to gain any motivation or incentive to strive forward through the game without subjecting the 8-bit sprite to a virtual state of "mu" and callously yonder forth like the type most commonly referenced to as "douchebag" or more technically: a "casual player"
This is probably the most traumatizing thing from my childhood to witness since watching Optimus Prime die on screen… twice. Once in 1986 and again in 2009.
that is no mario, if he climbs walls with full body clothes, he must be the prince of persia…
Your just noticing this?
I played through the entire game of super mario bros. wondering where the heck were the blue blocks on the box were.
Interesting observation, however, how do you explain that Mario has recoil as if you were jumping, as you describe it falling?
It's sad. When I first noticed this was when I was playing the game, and I died from falling in the fire pit.
Mario is on the cover. Luigi is the one in the gameplay pic. You can tell easily by the height difference.
i think the wall on the cover is a backround wall not a front one… (you can see mario's feet passing throu it)
Mario is thinking OH FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU
