Ha! That’s what you get, cheater!

People are actually pissed off at people that have halos.

They should be glad Valve didn't ban them, and instead they hate the fact that people who didn't cheat get rewarded, and they get punished for cheating.

Cry some more, babies.

It's not "people idle" that's the problem. It's not even "people got hats" that's the problem.

Valve did this because they need to have a zero-tolerance policy on any third party apps that break their way into the parts of the code and networking that are supposed to be off limits. Rather than saying "some programs are okay" and having a lot of people get whiny when their programs are the ones deemed not okay, Valve is drawing a clear line: you mess with this area, for ANY reason, and you get the stick.

This time they were "nice" about it. They didn't ban you. But you did abuse the system simply for stupid little hats. They didn't even take hats from the normal idlers, just the ones who used a hack to get them.

The message is clear: DO NOT BREAK IN FOR ANY REASON. If you want to whine about it, fine, but don't make this about the hats. It isn't. The hats were just the cause for this piece of software to be written, and because of *how* the software did it, Valve needed to send a message.

Yeah, fuck the losers who have jobs and don't want to waste their damn time on an achievement server. How dare they do something that has almost no affect on gameplay but brings great personal happiness! What did they think they're trying to do, have fun?!? Playing a game?!? Absurd!

I suspect that spiesrfunni is actually a hacker. Still only one hour of play time after almost 2 weeks*, and he has 4 hats? Suspicious.

This pic is full of truth, but the cheater heavy looks like the poorest victim ever, and he is not.

Seeing newbies getting dozen of hats is a pain for EVERYBODY.
Isn't a cheater getting hats for nothing as annoying as a noob getting it ? Both did not diserve it. The real victim is the honnest player, who until now had not a single hat.

Finally, an intelligent view on why people would idle.

And the fact that it comes from a very depressing yet entertaining comic strip says something about the choice of idling...

Also, one thing of note: the lone idler in the comic is a heavy, the STUPID character. Am I the only one who sees the perhaps unintentional yet metaphorical choice of characters?

OK, QUESTION TIME. I have NEVER played Team Fortress 2 on my own Steam account, due to computer problems. (On multiple computers.) However, I have downloaded it, and have managed to get to the server select screen. I believe it goes without saying that I have never used an Idling program.

Do I get a halo?

Resorting to manipulating the system is cheating, and nothing can prove otherwise. I used the program a grand total of three times, so I don't deserve the halo, or what I got. (not that I got any hats, but whatever) I won't feel sorry for any people who happened to use it once and got flagged.

Perhaps I'm just sore from frequenting the Steam forums, but this isn't funny. The only part that could be remotely considered an attempt at funny is spiesrfuni's antics. It's a political statement.

Not even a particularly good one; it makes it look like playing TF2 is a grind, done for the purpose of obtaining hats, and fails to deal with the issue behind all this. THEY'RE JUST HATS. PURELY COSMETIC. THERE IS NO REASON TO CARE THIS MUCH ABOUT THEM. It's never established why SandvichHeavy cares so much, instead taken for granted that hats are such an important facet of the game.

Not that I don't think the drop system is crappy or anything, or that the halos were a good idea. But this really isn't funny or insightful.

People who are butthurt about losing their cheated items dont seem to take into account that they can always get them back, and its supposedly easier to get them (though I've yet to see anything of the sort)

I don't understand the obsession with the hats. I hate how they did the weapon finding nonsense, but hats? I mean they don't even look interesting on the characters. I don't get it.

Though in fairness it's the same thing with the weapons, my anger isn't necessary there. oh well. I play once a month and probably have a halo right now, that's pretty neat, a nice bullseye, as if I wasn't bad enough in the first place.

Eh, what gets me is that we were told it was okay to idle before now. I don't really have a problem with it being against the rules now, but it's like reinstating alcohol prohibition, and then throwing everyone who has ever had a drink before in jail. Why not let us know it's wrong first, and then bust us if we keep doing it?

FLAMEWARRRRRRRR!

I got some unimportant items taken away, and i dont care. The halo doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the fact that they punished the idlers (which is okay) but still have no solution for the crappy drop system (which is not okay). This bandaid-philosophy is the main problem here. This is not L4D, where everything can be healed with gauze!
