All I know is that on my server the second someone sees a bloodelf, they automatically think it's a guy playing…because of this ^^. Then again, there are no male blood elves…

The guys do it so that they have something hawt to look at while they play and so that they get preferential treatment from boys who have boy characters. The girls play boys to avoid lewd comments and getting hit on. Or at least that's my reason. Of course, I've discovered that even if you play a boy character, you still get hit on by crazy female characters. So no matter what, you're actually screwed…
I usually play as a boy… that way, guys (who ironically oftenly play girls) leave me alone. As soon as they know, they get all weird and excited… A girl I met online abuse of men's niceness thereafter. I usually avoid revealing being a girl… And as Harui said, then they don't believe you. Then they 'hit' on "females" in-game.
What the hell? Why does the guy on the left look like me? He even has the same glasses o_O Did someone photoshop me without asking again?!
But I can't remember ever wearing that shirt…scary…
