Problem with swain is he's easily countered in mid lane, his only starting place, by better PVP mids. I love playing him but he ends up getting relegated to support roles, rooting/slowing, because he dosen't have the burst that most PVP AP carries do. Even though his E is a DOT you have to get closer than any of your other abilities to get it off. He's a lot o fun but is hard countered with the current meta.

I've seen him used as a successful top.
Plus, Rylais and RoA can settle him into a tankier role so his DoT has time to do its work. Sunfire and Banshees are good too.
