Damn and I thought Ponies + Portal would be instant 5 stars…
Woo hoo, first time posting, long timer lurking.
But anywho, what is the mega-popular appeal on MLP? I've searched quite a few sites and I still don't QUITE understand it. I even watched about 2-3 episodes midway into the season, never caught my eye as spectacular.
I see the reasoning behind it being liked but not to the level of ponygasm that its at. The show does have great animation, yes. Voice acting is surprisingly good for a show like this, doesn't make my ears bleed. Teaches good morals, and created by the same girl behind powerpuff girls and imaginary friends.
Those are all good things about the show. But… Still don't see why people are completely and absolutely infatuated by it. It's damn near EVERYWHERE. It's to the point where I think a large group of people are in the bandwagon because its sorta like a 'hipster' thing. But if someone truely enjoys it then let them.
So if anyone could answer as to exactly why it's mega popular, would be nice.

I wonder how many people gave this one stat solely because of ponies.
at aperture science we tried many team ups in our cooperative testing initiative. humans, robots, humans with robots, robots who once were humans, but somehow ponies seemed to get along with each other more than any other group. one problem, ponies are stupid! give one a portal device and she would sooner eat it than figure out a complex testing room with lasers and gels. what we had to do was genetically engineer intelligent ponies. we made them different colors and gave them tattoos to tell them apart and then they were running tests together in record times! the ponies also seemed to increase lab morale so that was an added bonus! fact. men love ponies. they also love porn which explains some of the names the boys gave them. unfortunately we cancelled the project when morale reached all time lows as the ponies started failing courses. nothing gets a group down more than seeing a robot scraping away the fried, bullet ridden remains of little old pinkie pie. nice try ponies! better luck next time.

Well brad, I'd say part is that for a series that is usually squarely aimed at little girls (to make them buy the toys), FiM delivers a lot more than it was expected to do.
Apart from the things you mentioned, there are also great characters, lots of little bits of humor that the target audience probably wouldnt even get, and a lot of other things.
For me personally, the best part is that it delivers those morals without coming of like they are talking down to the kids or tacking them on at the end without any real connection.
Also, Pinkie Pie is hilarious pretty much every second she's on screen.
