Ever since Sonic Heroes and the ugly beast that was Shadow the Hedgehog this is a sad reality. I won't give up hopes on the gutsy blue speed demon though.

Personally, I thought Sonic Unleashed was a fantastic game was simply stunning visuals, extraordinary gameplay (bar the night levels), and a magnificent music score. All points which most reviews did not pick up on, which fuels a deep-seated distrust I have with Sonic game reviews. Sonic Unleashed was most deffinately a positive incline on the largely negative line graph, that is his game repertoire since the early/mid 90s.

Also I think lots of people forget about Sonic Rush on the NDS. That game was marvellous, and quite the challenge too. What Sega need to do, and I feel I'm repeating what most of the gaming universe is saying, is going back to the roots and staying there. 2D, side-on, running-through-really-huge-loop-de-looping action. No exploring through three dimensions - that just creates strange blue tornados and bizarre homing attacks that throw you off the edge of the stage every once in a while. While running along a set track kinda worked in Sonic and the Secret Rings and (with improved controls) worked better in Sonic and the Black Knight, sticking to the 2D plane is deffinately a safe bet.

Poor Sonic. He's just the butt of jokes now.

Like this one:

His fanporn has better quality than his current games. Boom.

I'm embarrassed to say I fell victim to that vicious cycle many times now...

And then Sonic 4 comes out and breaks the cycle.

Sonic Team: "Umad, Sonic Cycle?"

I judge games based on two factors: fun factor, and replayability. Therefore, while there have been a few Sonic games that rued the day they toyed with me (rest in pieces, Shadow the Hedgehog), I find the majority of them to be really fun to play.

Sonic and the Black Knight, for example, was judged by IGN based on how it compares to older Sonic games, resulting in a score of 3.9/10. Last time I checked, that's even lower than Shadow the Hedgehog. Therefore, I believe IGN has mustard gas for brains, because SatBK was designed to give a new type of experience with Sonic, not bring him back to his roots.

This is all too true... in the "more screens" box, it would be appropriate to add "Stupid gameplay gimmick unveiled." Swords, werehogs, etc...

I WANT THE OLD SONIC BACK! Not this fancy 3d crap but some simple nice 2d side scrolling...With points! Lots and lots of points!

I'm not really much of a Sonic fan, but I surprisingly enjoyed Sonic Rush.

Then I played Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and frankly, it's like SEGA took one step forward and took 2 back.

Anyways, 5/5.

I thought it be cool if they just remade Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 in 2.5D just to keep us old sonic fans happy, i think the idea of Sonic Unleashed during the day was a great breath of fresh air. All my mates hate sonic the hedgehog games but soon they will get back to the top.....or not :S

Sad to see how most of Sonic's games have turned out.
They need to get out of the 3D platformer genre, It's really not working out...
They need to 'reboot' it, kinda like the New Super Mario Bros. I think it'd really work for them.

And I was just playing Sonic 2 on a Sega Genesis in first period in school today!
Where the Genesis came from, I don't know...

Unleashed (for the Wii) wasn't that bad, because they stuck to just running and jumping. I've seen people play the XBox one, and that had way too much crap instead of sticking to what Sonic stands for. I miss Old Sonic Team. You know, the PSO, Sonic 1-3/Knuckles Sonic Team. Sega could take a hint from Nintendo and WAIT to put out a franchise game until it is done and decent. That way, fans will love it and froth at the mouth for it and casual gamers will still be interested in checking it out.

There's a forth step in the Cycle for me, After the Game is Released and before any New info.

I Choose Someone to Kill,

Usually somebody who post after me in a Forum or a Comment Section that Bashes Sonic.

and its never Right away,

I have Patience,

You know How long I waited for Sonic Rush?

I see what you did there.
but I thought that Sonic Unleashed was really quite decent.
Sonic and the black knight = swords
swords + sonic = :P
:P = Sonic and the black knight.
the math works perfectly for THAT game

Hey, no problem Shawn. Happy to help point out the cycle of saddness. Gladly I'm not part of it, but I still know a decent Sonic game when I play it, i.e. Sonic Unleashed. No amount of mediocre werehog action can take away from the awesome SPEED of the SPEED levels. n_n

This wouldn't be bad if they just kept Sonic in his own element: 2d Fast Paced Platforming!

Not stupid spinoffs involving Air-boards or Swordplay!

Wow, this (old) pic has evoked some long comments.
I just ordered Unleashed for £12 actually. No-one in their right mind would pay full price for it, surely?
I do think this whole hating-on-Sonic thing is a bit of a bandwagon though. Lots of people judge the games without playing them. I'm gonna play it before I judge it - it may yet turn out to be awful, it may be alright. :-)

The new Sonic games are like movies based on games. Your hoping it'll be good but turn to be waste of money.

Well yeah, sonic started sucking since the release of the PS2/Xbox. Every single sonic related game (Gameboy Advance not included, since all the games released on it were good - probably has something to do with the fact that they're 2D, and very same old same old) released since has sucked. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the new sonic was going to suck, especially after i heard about the whole 'Werehog' thing. Don't get excited about a sonic game on a console anymore, it will definetely dissapoint. On the DS though it will be either okay or good.

umm... did anyone read the game informer magazine that had the bioshock 2 information on it... in there is an interview from the head of the original sonic team... and when he left he told them that they need to kill off the sonic franchise so they can work on something else so they make barely playable games (and even said that the werehog idea doesnt even sound like a playable idea) but every time they make a bad game their plan is thwarted by fanboys who WILL NOT STOP BUYING SONIC GAMES... so until the periodic sonic cycle is broken by a time of no sonic games... there will never be a good sonic game... EVER

Sadly, this is true.

Last good ones were SA1 and 2 in my opinion. >_>

But the old Genesis games were the best.

As much as I hate to say it (I grew up with the old Genesis Sonic games), this is painfully true. For me, the last "good" Sonic game was SA2: Battle on the GameCube. I didn't even want to TOUCH the newer ones.

;_; Oh Sega, why do you hate us so? Can't you listen to us just once?

Wow. This post has created quite a lot of deep, insightful comments on Sonic's current state of affairs. All of these points are true, Sonic games are in a serious decline due to a transition from 2-D to 3-D and the addition of repetitive plots as well as annoying characters. Sonic Unleashed's Chip comes to mind. Sadly, no truly great games will be released on account of the 'casual gamer', pestilence of the gaming world.

i'm a diehard sonic fan myself, but even i will admit that this has been very true since after Sonic Adventure 2, and there have been some pretty crappy games lately... mostly all the ones with shadow in them (he's not the kind of character you can bring back from the dead without making it seem lame), and subsequently every other character introduced in Adventure 1 and 2. and they have been a little lax on gameplay (understatement)
sonic unleashed, though it had its flaws, i thought was the best 3D game, and that if they keep that up (w/out the crappy dual-world gameplay) and improve on it, then MAYBE Sonic games would actually get good.
but i agree with Ron-Falco's comment about Sega not being able to listen to reviews OR fans. and that is a BIG problem on their part. if they did a) we wouldn't have effing 4Kids voicing the games and b) the gameplay would be so much better. but lately, what companies have listened to fans (without ruining their own franchise's storylines)???

to be honest, I do realize that Sonic games have gone downhill in the past few years. HOWEVER, I do think that sonic's lack of success puts Sega at fault just as much as the Sonic fanboys. They should be smart enough to realize that the games are only selling BECAUSE of the diehard fanboys and the people willing to try it out in hopes of this being Sonic's big break. If they would take note of the reviews (which actually mean something), and the angry gamer letters, then maybe they could produce a decent Sonic game.

Just my 2 cents

Lovely. More hate bandwagon. *sigh*
Its rather sad how people keep jumping the "BAD SONIC GAME" wagon when.. they really aren't all that bad. Every game has its flaws, whether its sonic or not. Just looks like Sonic games have their flaws paraded about more than others. I dunno. I've not played ALL the new ones, but the ones I've played a few times weren't as bad as the media seems to say.
Is why I tend to refer to this as a bandwagon.
I'm just stating my opinions, so no need to go back at me, I've no intention to have offended anyone.

Nah, it's just that Sonic fans will never ever be fucking pleased. Same with some nintendo fanboys, I bet 50$ that at least 1,000 different people will have a complaint with the HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes, pretty much most of them being from content un-added. Sonic games are never always good, but I thought Sonic Riders (the first one mind you, haven't played the second) and Sonic Unleashed were pretty cool, and Sonic series isn't dead yet, but it's own fanbase can kill it.
